Now We Are One! Poem by Carolyn Brooke

Now We Are One!

The walls
Seem to be made of sponge
Cake.
They close in
Layers and layers
Jam and cream and icing.
The jelly won’t set
It wobbles
Menacingly.
Sandwiches – triangles or fingers?
So important –
Make a good impression.
Expectations.
Look at my hair!
When did I last bathe
Alone?
Aargh! They’re here!
A flurry of pink
Tiny and cute
Sticky and loud.
The DVD player
Seems to be eating a jam sandwich
Is that sick on the cat?
My baby.
Beautiful girl.
A whole year old!
My life, my love, my choice.
Put the fish back in the bowl!
You can all go now.
Yes, goodbye!
Lovely to have you, thank you for coming, mwah, mwah!
SLAM! Thank god.
Just us.
Together.
