'And I will see you when the sun comes out again...'
—Sophie B. Hawkins, 'As I Lay Me', You Tube Music Video

—this poem is for Merrideth

When the sun comes out again,
you will have left for the last time,
not to come back, and I will be left
behind with your absent presence,
once again to remember what was,
left to deal with my feelings for you
that—well, what's the point here going
on like this? You breathe life into me,
you intensify, you make life worth
living for awhile. Then—you know
the rest of this, can finish this poem
if you wish. I bear memories of you,
the times we spent together, and those
days, hours I anticipated doing so.
Those times have now come to an end—
I can't help but write into the future—now
verdureless amidst February's cold rains.
