Not Eternal Poem by Mehreen Tahir

Not Eternal

Do not be overwhelmed,
By the silence,
The eerie darkness,
And the creeping shadows,
For they all dissolve,
Into nothingness,
As the night speaks.

Do not be afraid,
Of the killers moving amidst you,
And the sermons infusing hatred,
Nor pay heed to the hypocrite,
For all will sink into oblivion,
And none will remain,
As the true voices speak.

The night is still,
The voices are silenced,
Darkness engulfs everything,
Irrationality reigns supreme,
Clouds are gliding across the moon’s face,
Intolerance is creeping up in every heart,
Yet this night will fade away into morning,
And all will hear the voice of truth and reasoning.

Not eternal,
This frightening time will subside.
