Not Causing Distress [from 'proverbs 400' In Tamil]

Rating: 5.0

43. O, Wench with eyes shaming Lotus! Don't afflict
Even the lesser folks thinking they'll bear with
whatever pain you cause; gods too lose patience.
Don't do evil e'en to the simple and humble.

44. O, pale, beauteous flower-shoot like wench!
Something that grieves one grieves also others.
If the results of your acts are fruitless
Don't hate others and do evil to them.

45. If a dog is shut in a room and beaten
It will bite the owner himself. Don't scorn
Your kin who sought your support before others
as it will seem you're insulting their might.

46. O, my heart! You urged me to harm others,
as you're a fool. You don't know one who shows vice
reaps the same.If you hurt one in the forenoon,
you will get hurt in the afternoon.

47. If the stronger trouble the weaker, thinking
The latter is a scoundrel by birth, poor,
not propping and foe by his words, the tears,
the weaker shed grieves the stronger like Death.

48. Even though the stone at the peak of the hill is
small and easy to lift, one who pinches it
will sure to grieve. It will be criminal if one
thinks to make the respectable man poor.

49. No one chases and bites back an angry dog,
that seizes you. When those lacking character
and worth hurt the wise, it is unbecoming
the wise to get provoked and retaliate.

50. O, man with chain of pearls on chest! The high-born
shouldn't bear in mind the faults made by the low-born
who guard not good conduct. Or else it is
like hitting the fox with the sharpest arrow.

47. If the stronger trouble the weaker, thinking The latter is a scoundrel by birth, poor, not propping and foe by his words, the tears, the weaker shed grieves the stronger like Death. How true..... The weaker may not retaliate through harsh words or bitter actions, but the tears they shed through the anguish you cause them are powerful enough to burn you to ashes! Great translation!
