New Year Is Just Another Day Poem by Eunice Barbara Novio

New Year Is Just Another Day

Rating: 5.0

Plenty of foods on the table,
wines and liquors keep pouring
people dancing, shouting
everybody seems friendly,
forgetting the pasts and starting
to remember the next day.
Celebrating the first day of the year
welcoming the new day
with generosity, self-indulgence.
Firecrackers add to the joyous
celebration to ward off the evils.
Fireworks in the sky
beautifully compete
with the stars
that even these diamonds
put out their lights.
On the other side of the world
there is nothing to celebrate
but the gift of life that they are
able to have another day
but unsure if tomorrow will come.
In our celebratory moods
we forget, under the same sky
there are people huddled close
because they hear gunfires
instead of firecrackers;
exploding missiles
instead of fireworks.
A drop of water is enough
for a thirsty child
while another child spills
his milk to get soda.
A piece of bread is enough
for a dying child,
while cakes on the faces
of playful children.
And another year begins
a journey to make it
alive to celebrate another
New Year's day.

A thoughtful poem! Really, even nowadays I'm far from starvation, and I like to celebrate New Year's eve, but I never could understand some people's reaction to sufficiency and excesses. I think I belong to those individuals who see nothing funny in throwing cakes.
