Neither Rat Nor Bird Poem by Lekan Malik

Neither Rat Nor Bird

Spontaneously I was created
With features of a rat
And qualities of a bird.
I belonged to the two.
Relishing voraciously from both abodes.
Then the conflict erupted, rats and birds.
Who would I have supported?
The birds, my flying mates?
Or the rats, my crawling friends?
I dramatically sat on the fence.
The conflict ended
And both parties reconciled.
I was rejected by all
Seeing me as a betrayer.
I felt desolated,
And I began to wander at nights
To avoid shame
And faces of them all.
