Struggling vehemently for the mace.
The track is filled with obstructions
To derail my mind’s determinations.

Helper of destiny,
Someone who assists in attaining goals,
A diviner, who illuminates the pathway to greatness,
A palmist, who reveals

In the citadel of the literati,
Where all members gathered
With concordance of their literature
Which are admissible evidence

Oh! how beautiful you are my only bride.
Come to me, I need you by my side.
For your love is delightful to be a pride.
In your heart I want to reside.

In a quandary I stand
At the front of these
Two doors.
Neither covetous nor acquisitive,

God, are you still there?
I want you to be near
Because my enemies are giving me fear.

Why am I in danger?
Still, my foes give me anger.
Your powers, they said is wonder.

Issues may arise so tight
And make blockage to your sight.

Spontaneously I was created
With features of a rat
And qualities of a bird.
I belonged to the two.

It seems the so called
Callous human beings

In war,
There is no warrior.
Every man is for himself.
Then you see them,

In the dark,
We saw their shadow
In the dim of the light
Getting closer to us.

Even if I was not informed,
Or orientated enough,
Concerning your half mast posture,
But seeing you awkwardly,

So long was the queue
Like that of an immeasurable python.
People waited impatiently
And their anxiety never ceased.

I want to be a girl!
Who does not mind her business.
And ready to gossip all day long.
A girl that conceals one of her breasts

It’s been long
That he has been trying
To jump over
The tall and rocky fence.

All day long,
I stand to think of you.
All night long,
I lay to analyse

I am in the west
Standing on a platform to behold the north.
But alas! What did I see?

Lekan Malik Biography
Lekan Malik was born into a royal clan in Ikorodu Local Government Area of Lagos State. He is the first child of his parents. He attended Oriwu Model College, Ikorodu and the prominent Lagos State University (L.A.S.U) to study English Language and Literature. In 2012, he published his collection of short-stories, titled, 'It Happened That Night and Other Stories' which some schools already adopted and included in their curriculum. The themes in the collection vary, ranging from Mystery, Love, Poverty, Feminism, Religion, Culture Clash e.t.c 'Voice from the Citadel', a poetry collection was published in 2013. In this work, Lekan Malik actually met the literary expectations of the intelligentsia. " He used the effect of sonority in literary expression to demonstrate the power behind the ideas that are covered within the lineage of poetic rendition." -Akwen Charles, Lecturer, University of Lagos(UNILAG) . In 2014, his poem, 'Hope' gained recognition. It was published in three different Newspapers within the time-frame of twenty-two days and it was read nationwide. In The 2014 Literary Awards of Creative Writers' Association of Nigeria, Lekan Malik was awarded under the poetry category. It was predicted that he would make a good teacher. His teaching skills are unique and incontestable. He is the Founder, Citadel of the Literati and currently, the Co-ordinator, Creative Writers' Association of Nigeria(CWAN) Lagos State Chapter.)

Still on the long, long race,

The track is filled with obstructions
To derail my mind’s determinations.
So mighty are my contenders,
Strong and fit as the crusaders.
I see some running astray,
Some tired, seeking a shield to stay,
Others gasping and prefer dying
Because it’s difficult to continue trying.
The summit may be far or near
But certainly, I will get there.
