'NATALINE'

A poem by Richard David Cohen

How could it be I find myself being near to her.

I have been asleep for so long my eyes see but a blur

Have I lost my charms with my old fashioned ways

Just another foolish man how I could catch her gaze

Has ever been a beauty so completely unaware

How every room she enters all present eyes do stare

I never thought I could return to that once forgotten place

When seeing her across a crowd could cause my pulse to race

Much better men have then I have dared to believe
that they could win her precious love. and she would never leave.

It amazes me that even now such questions can persist

Even when my eyes long closed. see beauty does exist.

When I walked as a younger man my confidence within
I would sweep her off her feet this angel Nataline

So please do not scoff at me amused that I am blind
So sure she gently let me down with words so sweet and kind

I'll not forget the moment my heart stirred once again
I wish she would only ask for it for it belongs to Nataline.

For those whose pride and self respect reach not for glorious things
Who hide behind their walls, tethered are their wings

Safe are they protected having never dared to fly
who would be so reckless who would question why

If I have misjudged the wind not taking flight the greater sin
Then I will take solace that I was near to Nataline

So I'll listen to the voices compelling me to strive
To be a man of new born hope, whose heart became alive

Its often said thats things of joy cant be without a cost
So I embrace the days of sorrow and cherish things I've lost

I gladly welcome every storm and await the next to begin
and I will never curse the thunder when next to Nataline.
