My Pride Poem by Loushandra Wright

My Pride

I pray it’s not her destiny
For her to grow to resemble me
And fall victim to the same fate as me
If so I’ll hope that she’ll have faith in me
And feel loved enough to confide in me
So I can tell her that the tears that she
Cried were never supposed to be
How do I explain to one so sweet
That there’s no protection from reality
No solace from the fear it brings
Strength and support is what she’ll need
To escape the nightmare’s legacy
And I will provide all these things
Along with whatever she asks of me
I’d kill or die for her truthfully
Endure torture without requesting sympathy
Bleed before the betrayal of my family
Give my last breath for the ones who created me
Though I’m no example of what to grow to be
My heart beats for the smile of my mini-me
Never in my life has a day been serene
As when my mom brought home my love, Ollie.

P.S.
The day you were introduced to me
Is the day my heart began to beat
Brown sugar baby, with cocoa hands and feet
You will grow to refine natural beauty
Bronze skin that shines rich in ebony
Intellectual essence soaked in your speech
A love for you runs through me so deep
You may summon me for anything
Since the day you were brought home to me
You have become my everything
