My Heart Fluttered... 'I Have Remembrances Of Yours...

Rating: 4.5

My heart fluttered
As a hummingbird
When I first saw you,
Met you,
Got to know you.

But now
It is winter
Time to close
The doors, shut
Windows
Put up plastic,
Light a fire, burn everything just
To keep warm.

I shouldn't,
I mustn't,
See you again.
Yet I still know so little about you,
But my sin, but my sins.

'in thy orisons be all my sins remembered.' W.S. 'Hamlet'

COMMENTS OF THE POEM

the hummingbird is the author. or was. it is a metaphor for his infatuation, his love. but the realities of his life and of distance has changed everything. and so what he has done is closed up his heart, wrapped his feelings away and is burning up everything including the memory of her. this is what will leave him cold as winter, alive but cold as death. the heat of burning things is not meant to keep him warm only destroy. the only thing he can't not destroy is his guilt, obviously he did somthing wrong. he instigated the split up and the winter, he is the god of his own destruction. and probably her's as well. it is not so much a sonnet as an elegy, a death poem. m r is a friend of mine from long ago. she would recognize herself and agree, for she too is like the snow, and from what i know of what happened since, is as sad as he is. obviously, the hummingbird summer was as short as a july afternoon. rjs
