My Down Poem by Mitchell Hood

My Down

My stance is set, my heels dug in
You see it coming, you see me grin
Once or twice before, you’ve pushed me around
But not here, not now, not on this down
Down, set, hut! You think you’re ready?
You look a little shaky, not too steady
Too late now, I’m coming through
You’re not going to stop me, not much you can do
I hit the line like a truck and run you straight down
Then keep right on going, making you look like a clown
Did you get my number? It’s fourteen plus one
You’ll need to know it to report that hit and run
I spin the guy behind you. He doesn’t have a clue
But at least he stays on his feet a little better than you
Now I’m home free, open field all around
Didn’t I tell you that this was my down?
That’s six points on the board, just like I said
And you’re still fifty yards back, hanging your head
