Mute But Not Blind Poem by Oduntan Olawale

Mute But Not Blind

His eyes burns with determination
Everything he does to prevent damnation
truly, nothing should stop you
from being successful except if allowed

He drives with deep concentration
in his world, all has to work
there's no playtime.
His intelligence makes it look so easy,
He has no issues with traffic laws.

Tap him when close to your bus stop
He knows how and when to stop.
He might not decode words,
but he possess good anticipation
at the first few signals.

Other drivers horn is not an issue,
he knows how to use his mirrors
indeed deficiency is not a syndrome.
So many are being said about him
the marvel of him being able to commercialize
paying and receiving your change, never an issue.

People overlook the odds which gives him my salute.
He is able to overcome deficiency
and tap from an economy
according to many is crumbling.

A good living he will make.
In my curiosity, I try to ask.
'Friend, what would you do in a
commercial bus where the driver is MUTE? '

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
In Nigeria, transportation is a commercial business to individuals. So many who have a deficiency or the other are mostly known for begging for alms but on this personal encounter, i was in a bus where it is your responsibility to speak at the Top of your voice so that you don't alight miles past your bus stop. This driver is mute and according to people's comments, am not sure he can hear but i studied him closely and wrote this poem about him.
