Mountain To God Poem by Kathleen Reguindin

Mountain To God

Standing at the mountain base
Into the heavens I gaze
Beyond is my ultimate destination
To get there I must climb this mountain.

Peak covered by clouds
To get to the top will do me proud
The trails are many, I know I will go off track
Or worse, to civilization I may want to head back.

I started my trek with a great determination
This trek of life I must see through to completion.
Eiger and Annapurna pale in comparison
The ascent to His abode difficult beyond imagination.

The first phase of my journey posed many a challenge
I fell from the main track so many times
Banged up and bleeding, I got up on my knees, that I managed
Ready to give up and forget this life’s climb.

On my slow ascent, the pinnacle beyond reach.
Strong winds and storms battered me
All this anger and frustrations, take them away, I beseech!
I know I should be better than the people who hurt me.

I look down at the far valley, where life is easy
Up here on the mountain, I am alone, I am freezing
I am scared to be on my own on this journey
Tempted to turn back, lights down below so welcoming.

I ask myself, what if I get to the top and find no one there
This journey will have been futile, this thought I couldn’t bear!
My sacrifices and pain all for nothing?
In this moment of doubt, I rise up, my soul shaking.

Now on the second phase of life’s ascent
Wounds and cuts of my earlier falls into scars they’ve turned
The ascent is so steep, my fingers always looking for a grip
Only I can do this, only I can finish this trip!

When I slip from the trails, my efforts negated.
Catch me, Lord, so I won’t fall into the abyss.
Help me up on my feet and come to my aid.
My need for You, do not dismiss.

And onwards I go, I have not given up
I accept my struggles, one day I will reach the top
Each step I take makes me stronger, braver
Each step I take brings me to You closer.
