Momma Said Poem by Melissa Bange

Momma Said

momma said I wouldn't get far
wishing on a shooting star
wish I may, wish I might
see her in my dreams tonight

it never shoulda been so rough
I should have my mothers love
instead of searching for the truth
tracing scars from my youth

you were such a beauty then
casting spells on all the men
every night a different lover
no time to be a mother

but momma don't you know
I still feel your pain
it's every where I go
in every dropp of rain
and momma don't you lie
I know you can see
you're not the only one who cries
you're not the only one who bleeds

different towns and different schools
we were always on the move
bar fights, black and blues
I learned to cover every bruise

momma was I good today?
do you think that we can play?
I promise I won't make you mad
momma why you look so sad?

I never shoulda been afraid
hiding underneath my bed
I'd cry myself to sleep at night
Listening to the latest fight

some things we can't change
but you work through the pain
though its hard to talk about
I am stronger from it now

cause momma said I wouldn't get far
wishing on a shooting star...
