Midnight Train (Slaves' Escape) Poem by Joanna Hamilton

Midnight Train (Slaves' Escape)

Rating: 5.0

The whistle blowing in the night
The cargo whispers silently
Death closing in around them
Freedom growing nearer
Suspense overwhelming

Free! Free! Free!
The cargo has arrived safely
Life is restored
By a Friend with a friend

Air! Fresh air!
Gasping for breath
Running
Running again

The past catching up
Gunshots sound
Dogs bark wildly
North! We must go north!

The document signed
Nowhere is safe
Nowhere is free
Not anymore

Fear seeping in
The past approaching quickly
Freedom getting closer
The chase coming to a close

“Free at last! Free at last!
Thank God Almighty we are free at last! ”

The rhythm is perfect. It's like the reader is one of the slaves running for freedom. And the suspense! You have captured the moment brilliantly. Excellent write, Joanna. You might like my Child Soldier; Killing Mine Enemy With Kindness
