May As Well...



I could deny the uttermost dominion
you effortlessly practice on my being-
cultivate the opposite opinion
cross your doorway stoney and unseeing.
I, no less, could, studying the part,
air indifference and cool laissez-faire
solely to my vanity impart
the issues of this silent, sad affair.
I could pretend my heart, that anvil on fire,
loathes the blows you give it and propose
to love the intervals between the blows,
dear-like any ordinary liar.
But you would guess my folly and despise
my case the worse for trudging in disguise.
