~ Mantra - Poem by Adeline Foster

~ Mantra

A cloud has crossed your sunny day.
This too, with time, will pass
And once again the snow will go
And green will be your grass.

I was drawn to this poem by the title MANTRA and I expected a Hindu-inflected poem, perhaps like some of the Bhakti poets who have been translated in recent years by people like my fellow Minnesotan Robert Bly. Imagine my surprise when your poem turned out to be this delicate lyric reassuring a friend that whatever has got him/her down will pass. And then the sweet closing couplet - And once again the snow will pass / And green will be your grass. It occurs to me that change from snow to green grass has the unbeatable force of Nature behind it which makes it inevitable! I'm using heavy language to articulate a buoyant and fleet poem. The phases of life are not uniformed and yes, a phase does not stay for long...i'm not sure it's connected or not but it reminds me of the celebrated lines, If winter comes, can spring be far behind? (Report) Reply
