Mako Island Poem by Justin Gildow

Mako Island

I've pitched my tent
And the fire is burning
Tonight, I'm spent
Ad I wonder if magic abounds
Whether by sight or sound
On this very night
As the world is turning
On Mako Island

Tonight
The moon pool shimmers
and shines
Waiting for the right time
Lying in wait

And I wonder
As I'm somewhere on this island
tonight
If I'll have company on this very
night

Mermaids
Real or imaginary
Are nearby
At least I'd like to believe
In my own mind

Somewhere
In that cave
That houses the moon pool
Some girls are approaching with
caution
While some have thrown caution to
the wind

The moon slowly moves across the
night sky
Hovering over that dormant volcano
And from the noises that I can hear
Those girls have bathed in the glow
of the moonlight
They've soaked in the moon pool
Odds are that they'll have tails
Thinking they're cool

I wonder if I'll see any of them
Or meet any of them
In the time to come

But for tonight
As I've poured water over the fire
And get set for bed
Inside my tent
Ready for my pillow to meet my head
A shooting star soars across the night
sky
Followed by a supernova
I wonder if the girls or mermaids will
see them
And perhaps be entranced by them
I know I have tonight
Smiling at the night sky
