Long Overdue (Chant Royal)

The Sweet “I-love-yous” do go far
To make precious the weary day.
I know of nothing that can par
With meanings that these words convey.
Some gifts draw close-about ten miles;
They do not get the full-size smiles,
As these most sacred words by you;
My sweet, your eyes report love too,
And of your love they boldly said,
“From day one love in frenzy grew.”
Because of love, you, I would wed.

I catch each one and store in jar,
For their return my life I’d pay.
But would I ever lose my star,
For cause to kneel in murky clay?
No! God forbid: For even Niles,
If there were ten that go for miles,
Or seas, on all the planets blue
Would not compare to tears I’d spew.
But grief will not become sour hatred,
For such is not of love that’s true.
Because of love, you, I will wed.

I love ‘I-love-yous’ yelled from far:
I want the world to know they say.
So shout it when you drive the car,
And shout it over sea and bay.
The louder sound, the best it files,
Removing dread of lover’s wiles.
I love ‘I-love-yous’ in any hue!
When whispered tells we’ll make it through
The obstacles that lies ahead;
Our love, they heartily construe.
Because of love, you, I will wed.

I love ‘I-love-yous’ in Qatar,
I love ‘I-love-yous’ in Bombay;
Tell of your love in each bazaar,
Tell of your love at each bouquet.
Tell of your love in western isles;
In many forms and many styles.
Say that you love me at the zoo,
And on the beaches of Peru,
Say it aloud when in our bed;
Each moment Love, I love you too!
Because of love, you, I will wed.

The song sounds sweeter with guitar
The balls are useless but for play;
I’m happy only when you are
Right by me, and here, please do stay.
I love how you push my e'er dials
Just right, so meet me down the aisles.
I’ll stand, and in your dress of blue
With ring and kiss, we’ll claim ‘I do’
Our hearts will pump and cheeks will red.
In time, this joy we will renew.
Because of love, you, I will wed.

Our marriage is long overdue,
Such love man rarely can accrue.
The ways you love me are widespread,
So only your hand's vow will do.
Because of love, you, I will wed.

Poem of the Day

poet Charles Stuart Calverley

He stood, a worn-out City clerk —
Who'd toil'd, and seen no holiday,
For forty years from dawn to dark —
Alone beside Caermarthen Bay.
