The late afternoon sun slants down in the corner
where grandpa stands always to against his winter
simmering still, in his folded wrinkles, pure age's laughter
laughter, every time in a glimpse, we giggle together
till the eyes full of water
till the water stirring with more laughter
laughing in another corner, my dear grandma
secretly collects this again to her life drama
In this nine-line poem, the laughter begins in line 4 and increases with each line in a crescendo of high spirits uniting you and your grandparents, and in a larger sense two generations, and all those big issues that can cause worry and stress - aging, increasing health problems, their heritage and memory, eventually death itself on their side ofTime, uncertainty about the future, your job or career, enjoying friends and caring for family, on your side of Time - all those big issues can be set aside temporarily as you simply enjoy being a family, as the American poet Wallace Stevens put it, BEING THERE TOGETHER IS ENOUGH. (I read that line to my mother when she was in her late 80s, and she fell in love with that sentiment.)
Being there together is enough, it's the secrect of love, i know it, my grandparents, too. I can imagine the shining happiness stirring in your mother's tender eyes, the moment you shared that sentence of wisdom with her will be a treasure in both of your memories.
