Late October Poem by Timmy Tubbs

Late October

Late October, Faye’s Motel vacancy sign shorted out
Those petals dried up years ago anyhow
Guess I never saw that train coming as I stumbled over your tracks
Every dish I ever served you came with a side of razor blades
And all of these apologies only dull their edges

Without change, a rose would only be a seed hidden in dirt
I never gave you rain or the right seasons to grow
We were stuck in winter
Dead and frozen

So I’ll spend the rest of my life
Crossing these T’s and dotting those I’s
To the words that decorate my sorrys and describe our life
Because I truly believe we deserve another try
So let’s take it
I’ll smear away my lies with a tissue to your eye

We both have changed
That is obvious
But who called for this revolution?
Because I’ll confess
I’m taking this like a slug to the chest
I’m failing you
But as big as your steps are
I can’t catch my breath
