In Memory Poem by Jennifer Peckins

In Memory

I saw your shining face
Once before
Just before
The last time you stepped out the door
And walked off
And tried to escape
A world where you only found torture
Just torture in this place
Left a little early in more ways than one
Drank from the glass
Jumped in the whip
Didn’t even bother to go to class
That was your last walk
Did you enjoy it
Enjoy the shaky stumble
Did every bottle in the car fit
You drove off in the morning
Didn’t look back
So mixed up in the world
It took you so long to react
Once her foot hit the floor
Did your dancing stop
Were you finally surprised
That you weren’t left on top
That’s what you always wanted
To break free from the disappointments
To get away from reality
Find a way back to all the missed appointments
Are you happy now
I’m sorry those are such hateful words
For you all I’ve ever felt was love
Anything else would be absurd

I miss her
She has an angel’s smile
It wasn’t her turn
Wish she could’ve stuck around for a longer while
