I Use To Be Poem by Matthew Foor

I Use To Be

I used to want to be a police officer
But now I
Want to be a poet
I used to
Want to drive a nice car
But now I
Will settle for a junker
I used to
Have friends
But now I
Only have acquaintances
I used to
Want to be in love
But now I
Don't want that responsibility
I used to
Want a job as a chef
But now I
Am waiting on disability
I used to
Watch TV
But now I
Read poetry
I used to
Live on my own
But now I
Live in a group home
I used to
Be society's definition of normal
But now I
Am mentally ill
I used to
Care what people thought of me
But now I
Could care less
I used to
Be a drug addict
But now I'm clean
I am still an addict
Once an addict
Always an addict
I used to
Drink
But now I
Am sober
I used to
Weigh less
But now I weigh more
I used to
Be a lot of things
I used to….
But now I
Am done
