I Thought I Was A Christian Poem by Michael P. Johnson

I Thought I Was A Christian

I thought I was a Christian when
I joined my church’s choir
I thought I was a Christian then
I saw I failed The Fire

In some I saw amazing grace
In others peace and joy
The aura in the smiling face
Of still a mere boy

Strange! I thought how this could be
How faces so could shine
God in others was plain to see
But what was seen in mine?

Jealousy touched my aching soul
My heart was filled with zeal
Could someone help me to my goal?
Could something make me real?

Quick the bible I took to hand
Reading it day and night
Praying The Lord to understand
Would send His Guiding Light

I asked The Lord would show The Way
I asked Him what to do
Hoping like all the rest one day
I’d learn to serve Him too

God saw my heart my eager mind
He heard my fervent prayer
He saw my faith my zeal to find
The facts of life to share

So many years have come and gone
Though more is my desire
I’m serving God through Christ His Son
Still singing in the choir
