I Still Have You...... Poem by RIC BASTASA

I Still Have You......

when love is gone
we stay. we will not talk about
what happened to love.
we stay, but we will not say
a word about why we are
staying.
we keep on doing the usual
things, we make things move
the way they should.
you keep busy with your cellphone.
i keep busy with my work, whatever.
i visit the garden, you sit by the
porch on that wooden chair that papa
gave you on our wedding day.
i still smoke my cigar using the
pipe.
i prune the fruit trees in the orchard.
you watch the movies in Netflix.
i do facebook, you do viber.
i travel with friends you too.
we meet again in the house when we
are finally exhausted.
sleep on the same bed as though
nothing life changing has happened.
love has gone by, leaving us with our
usual selves, starving for love and
not making love.
this is old age, and it is taking
us to a new land where love in a sense
does not exist.
perhaps we have mistaken what left us.
perhaps it was not love at all.
perhaps this is love, this patience,
this commitment to make it at the grave,
and still be together gazing at each other
still saying, I have you.
