I Pledge Allegiance Poem by Shirley Your Speaker Smith

I Pledge Allegiance

Place your right hand over your heart and repeat after me

I pledge allegiance
To extend my hand to lift you up
To help carry your load
To speak up for you when you cannot

I pledge allegiance
To feed the hungry
To give water to the thirsty
To cloth the necked

I pledge allegiance
To look into your eyes
To hear your heart
To enter into your suffering
To honor you as equal

I pledge allegiance
Not to judge you by your zip code
Not to label you a terrorist because of your name
Not to hold you accountable for what some one else does

I pledge allegiance
To honor your talents
To make room for you at the table
To include your ideas
To acknowledge you

I pledge allegiance
To work diligently to live up to these pledges
I pledge to pledge to these pledges
