I Pity All Poor Creatures Poem by Francis Duggan

I Pity All Poor Creatures

And though i envy the birds their freedom of the sky
I pity all poor creatures that run or jump or fly
They live in fear of people from us they hide away
And many die because of us that does seem sad to say.

I pity all poor creatures that swim or walk or crawl
From the earth worm to the great blue whale i do pity them all
They are at our disposal since the food chain we do rule
And though some of us can be merciful some of us can be cruel.

I pity all poor creatures of us they live in fear
And they never seem happy with one of our kind near
As fast as they can run or walk or crawl out of our sight they flee
They do not trust us human kind and they do not trust me.

I pity all poor creatures that walk, crawl, swim, hop or run
Their fastest speed will not save their lives from the bullet of the gun
And I'm as guilty as anyone since i eat meat every day
And for many of us to live creatures must die that does seem sad to say.
