I Heard A Goldfinch Singing Poem by Francis Duggan

I Heard A Goldfinch Singing

I heard a goldfinch singing in the twilight of the day
His twittering notes did take me to a woodland far away
To the high wood of Claramore overlooking Millstreet Town
On the calm of a Spring evening in the twilight post sundown

The familiar song of a familiar bird to me did take me far away
To a woodland on the higher ground on a Spring evening in May
But on going back the decades this now seems long ago
And time that ages everything has since become my foe

The cloak of night did envelop the high fields by Clara hill
And the only sound for to be heard was the babble of the rill
Flowing downland to the rivers to the Atlantic shore
And the silence it was profound in the darkened wood of Claramore

It is true about good memories a lifetime they remain
And the twittering song of a goldfinch took me to the past again
To the high wood of Claramore on the gloaming of the day
Just before the onset of night in the bloomful month of May.
