I Have Not Forgotten Old Fields Far Away Poem by Francis Duggan

I Have Not Forgotten Old Fields Far Away

Rating: 5.0

In monetary terms I must have been poor
But with April Spring came to Inchaleigh, Claraghatlea and Annagloor
The nesting birds sung on bush, hedgerow and tree
And Nature's wild beauty was lovely to see.

The passing of time has left me looking gray
But I have not forgotten old fields far away
And the song of the robin I can visualize
In the grayness of dawn before sunrise.

Old memories of Nature's beauty I carry today
The hawthorn trees in their white blooms of the May
The male chaffinch singing on a sycamore tree
Memories of past beauty are living in me.

In June all day long young birds chirped in hedgerow
And the male pheasant cucked where the rank rushes grow
And the swallows chasing flying insects through the sky
And the dipper he sung in the river nearby.

Fond memories of what was all migrants retain
And in fancy I walk in the old fields again
When the colourful wildflowers beautify Nature's green
And the bluebells are in bloom on the ditch of the bohreen.
