I Forgot The Password! Poem by Michael Pruchnicki

I Forgot The Password!

That was the last thought,
the last glimmer of consciousness
PFC Rafferty had as the high velocity
round crashed through his skull
splattering blood and brain
leaving him sprawled in disarray
on his final day on the Naktong
near a village called Waegwon
in South Korea.

We'll be back in Japan by Christmas,
he thought, just a few weeks here
and then the girls in Yokohama
will welcome us -

but the password eluded him
in his confusion and a fellow trooper
on guard fired the round
that passed through his head
and burned its errant way
through space and time!
