I Could Not Afford To Love You Poem by Danny Ballan

I Could Not Afford To Love You

I could not afford to love you,
I would have no heart;
And no heart with which to float
With my face alone facing the blue.
Feeling not the love you have for me
Nor the thunderous passion I have for you.
There would be no veins to hold the tears,
Nor to hold the blood with which I wrote-
This love song is so true
Can't you see?

I could not afford to love you,
I would have no eyes.
Can't you see?
It would blind the life out of me,
And leave me not until I can't see no more.
You wouldn't catch the words,
Nor would you figure out the lies.
A bed by which I would dream of the core;
A dream I would never have eyes for,
I would see only you,
Strip and bare,
Not being able in the darkness to stare-
Your glow would blind me more.

I could not afford to love you;
I would have no words.
And my paintbrush would be broken-
For a painting that I could never finish,
A masterpiece was left to be taken,
An eternal barrier between the tongue and the thought;
Crystals would be stuck right down my throat-
I would slowly pass away … diminish.
The only gift I would never cherish
Would be my vocal chords.

I could not afford to love you,
I would have no life;
I would drag you with me to the underworld;
A life where you would be dead,
And one day you would blame me,
And say that of this day nothing I have ever said.
I would rather stay here instead,
Even it is cold,
You will always warm me.
I am sorry my lady,
My life can never …again … for free … be sold.
