I Am One Like You Poem by P K Joy

I Am One Like You

I am a man like you,
one in bones, flesh and blood
With all the same six senses,
and similar thoughts in my head,
As much strong, as much weak,
and as much ambitious as you are,
With all the same rights and duties.
I’m different only in culture.
I wish, you were conscious of this
simple truth, my precious friend
And refrain from making my
life in your neighborhood laden with dread.
Are you conscious of this
when you throw rubbish into my compound?
Are you conscious of this
when you throw dead rats into my courtyard?
Are you conscious of this
when at odd times you blast loud music?
Are you conscious of this
when you misuse our lane and block traffic?
You are not conscious of this
when your quarrels disturb me in the nights.
You are not conscious of this
when you discharge sewage into my house.
You are not conscious of this
when you act with no concern for others.
You are not conscious of this
when you expect none to counter your views.

This fact you are forgetting
when you boast aloud publicly
And slander me by comparison
in open fora mockingly
I wish you to remember that
if I too talk and act in your way,
You will lose your puffed up bigness,
and for peace sake you’ll have to run away.
