How Shall I Love You, Lover Of My Soul? Poem by Heather Jephcott

How Shall I Love You, Lover Of My Soul?

How shall I love you, O lover of my soul?
What return can I make
on a love that has no end?
my loving you appears
so insignificant
tiny in this vast ocean of life
Your loving spans time going through death
How infinitely miniscule, finite my love
my heart, my soul makes so little noise
the angels cannot hear
I cannot sing loud enough
for the whole world to hear
maybe not even the neighbours
I know deep within that loving
is more than positioning
it's not just about your loving me,
who I am....me loving you, who you are
it's wider, broader, more immense than that
it's more than a platitude
like putting you first, loving you best
definitely more
Is it to love others,
to be a smooth running channel
of your love
flowing through and ever onwards?
Is this part of the return you desire?
loving you expressed in loving others

Does loving you mean
knowing your nearness?
Having you close, in my thoughts
continuously, never moving,
or straying
believing, considering, understanding what you say,
trusting your knowing best
sitting still for you
being here to be fed, used,
to rest
open
extending your wide open arms
to others
welcoming........

'as much as you do it for the least of these....'
