How Fast These Years Poem by Juan Olivarez

How Fast These Years

How fast these years have passed me by,
Time stands still for no man.
Like birds heading south, in a Winter's sky,
Or a tight fist loosing grains of sand.

I know it's so common, quite the cliche,
To ponder on time flying by.
And to remark it feels like yesterday
When so innocent were my eyes.

And yes, it seems when you were young,
Time would not move at all.
You yearned for songs yet to be sung,
You could weather any squall.

And now in the twilight of my years,
It all seems like one big blurr.
Time has worn down and stripped my gears,
Without an ' I beg your pardon sir.'

But through the joy and sadness too,
Life truly has been quite a trip.
It sputtered at times like engines do,
And then moved along at a very fast clip.
