Heritage Poem by kayla geralds

Heritage

our heritage began once as slaves
luckily some survived until this day
Martin Luther King Jr having a dream
To Rosa Parks Not giving up her seat
The white slave owners treating them harshly
Wanting to become free some found a way
Harriet Tubman founding the underground railroad
Marches and Marches just to be heard
Back in those days slaves worked as maids
Separate restrooms and schools
Was just how they was raised
Not knowing the difference Between White and black
No matter the skin tone It was all the same

Doing what they wanted
Because they was free they left the poor with nothing to eat
If they disobeyed they would get beat

Attacked by dogs, Drowned with water hose
The white had all the control
It was time to make a change

Look at today we celebrate black history
From what ancestors and generations went through just to be free
To be thankful today because we can dream
To go to school with all different nationalities
Moving on down we see African Americans in the hall of fame
Because nothing could stop them from their dream

After the civil war black teams first competed against each other
Now people can believe in their dream
Inspiring poets like Maya Angelou
Still She is a phenomenal woman
Until this day some do segregate
Just to notice some just cant see
Or not even stop and help the elderly
For most of all we all dreams

Let nothing get in the way of you and your dream
Because of this I can say
I thank god everyday and give him his praise
Maybe you cant be perfect
But in your own way show your dream
And may god bless you on this wonderful day
