Heaven On The Trail Poem by Ron Secoy

Heaven On The Trail

Maybe heaven or the Chisholm Trail?
My eyes beheld a marvelous scene
Above the skies were a turquoise blue
The bermuda knee high and deep green

Cattle fat and ready to cross
The gently rippling Canadian River
Their contented lowing and calm attitude
Made me think of staying here forever

The aroma of the trail biscuits baking
Mixed with cowboy coffee filled the air
Just a little more pushing the herd north
With God’s blessing and soon we’d be there

Crawled out of my cozy bedroll
To meet cowboys wearing broad smiles
The happiest buckaroos I’ve ever seen
Ready to ride for miles and miles

Cool morning with just a hint of wind
The sun sneaking up over the horizon
Stretched and scratched, pulled on my boots
Grubs hot and ready, hungry, not surprisin’

Never knew a day any better
This the place, this is the time
Lookin’ forward to the rest of the day
“Hey Clint, you ain’t worth a dime”

Foreman just throwing a hissy fit
Get up know and hitch up the team
Before I could savor another moment
I realized it was just a dream

But heavens waiting I know
God has promised me a place
Where there’s peace and joy
When I get to see his face.
