Harry Chapin Poem by Ray Hansell

Harry Chapin

Rating: 5.0

I remember way back when
In nineteen seventy two
I was listening to the radio
Just like I'd always do

I heard a song come on
That I'd never heard before
So I laid there and listened
I had no idea what was instore

The longer I listened
The more intrigued I became
It told quite a story
Taxi, was the songs name

Another thing I quickly noticed
This song was very long
But the rhyming lyrics
Made the story line so strong

The record played for over six minutes
When most songs lasted three or four
But while listening to the record
I thought, this is a hit for sure

It was sung by Harry Chapin
A name I'd not heard before
But singing songs like this
He'd be heard forever more

He was a story teller
Each song had depth and meaning
Listening to his music
Could set your mind to dreaming

His talent was enormous
His writing skills superb
His records all contained
Some of the best music I ever heard

It seems just like with so many others
He was taken from us too young
I know he had more stories
Along with more songs to be sung
