Guilty! ! ! Poem by Truth Osumareton Egbe

Guilty! ! !

Why is my heart racing at the sight of him?
Why is Jide suddenly leaving after just arriving?
Who is this guilt that has overtaken me with a mind of his own?
Where are my legs taking me to?

Should I jump into the next available moving vehicle or cross the road?
Should I stop to inquire the situation?
Was there even a crime committed?
Where are my legs taking me to?

Is it this short dark man that ignites such fear in me?
Is it his scarred face or perhaps his big black gun?
Or is it the authority and power that his uniform commands?
Where are my legs taking me to?

Is his job not to protect citizens and the land?
Can I trust him as I am obligated to?
Is he chasing me because I am running?
Legs answer me! Where are you taking me to?

13 miles,20 minutes 30 seconds away from where it all started
A thirty year old woman's body lies lifeless on a muddy road
The driver responsible was trying to avert the hitting of a running man
Legs what is it you have done to me?
You told me to flee from all appearance of constituted authority because they are evil
