(growing Pains) In The Eye Of The Beholder Poem by Janice Windle

(growing Pains) In The Eye Of The Beholder

Rating: 3.4

Has the time arrived? Is it here?
Must I at last believe the mirror?
Must I accept, must I confront my fear
that my reflection is no ghastly error?
Gazing from the cave where my soul clings
I see past shadowy nose the lizard folds
that used to be my burnished satin skin –
I can’t deny that I am getting old.

I hardly need a mirror made of glass
to tell me the reality, and why
I don’t meet ardent glances as I pass
and I’m invisible to passers-by.
But let the passers-by keep passing by –
my beauty is created in my lover’s eye.

I liked the poem by the very first read. There is some dignity and elegance in all your works, in the way you welcome the changes and life. By the way, when I was 22 the fear about getting old first came to my mind and I hurried up to make some mistakes :)) since then i avoid to think about this ;) . It is useless and after 10 years you think 10 years ago I was young :) . You are absolutely right about the eye of the beholder. Let's keep this precious eye for longer open. Without the loving eyes all the beauty is worthless. Wonderful poem, Janice!

Two little tankas for being the you I love...you are forever and always beautiful to me....the only thing that touches you is my love! You are like a tuning fork...you are never just one age...you ressonate from age to age...becoming ageless...now my lover's eye beholds the little girl you still are...then the 23 year old...now...that sweel sixteen...now that slightly more mature lady...now...now...always changing...always forever becoming the you you are. I love the you you are and the you you are becoming. I will adore you when you are 64! Hurry up and get there! I love all time spent with you and devote myself to loving you. love Dónall Wearing nothing but little flower in your hair that had stowed away as you passed by in beauty flower pleased to adorn you. Hibiscus...bloom...gone all in the same day...each day bloom again in new way. Moon too crumbles exhausted makes again its own beauty.

Almost as good as a Jenny Joseph. I too appreciated those last lines. Adeline

I love this poem - from the title to the true beauty of the final line, it touches the heart. Only one criticism, you've got me checking in the mirror for 'lizard folds' - what a shocking observation! S ;)

Simply delightful Janice. Our writing group used this theme and it was interesting to read all the poems on looking in a mirror. Your last two lines are just oh! so romantic. 10 Karin Anderson
