Fleeing Heroes Poem by Eric Mwenda

Fleeing Heroes

Get up!
You screw up of the day,
calabashes lay broken
for cows done gone dry

The shadows of clouds
sweeping across distant valleys
Bring to us closer
the heels
of our fleeing worriors

Pack up and leave
or open your eyes
and with us
stand strong
for their coming
isn't without draught

Mutabari is out in the wind
wailing,
ready to take flee.
Will you siren with him
through the exit
or not?
Or do you
all you want to do
is sit shut the eye

Brother,
we will be trampling
on slumbering bodies,
when finally,
here
lands our fleeing hope
