First Game Poem by Colin Burger

First Game

A mere child of five
He walks through the gates for the first time
Awe struck with the immense size of the stadium
His father urges him to move father in
The child is overtaken with the sights and sounds
The atmosphere of baseball is in the air
He asks is his father “daddy why do all these people come here”
And he replies “well, for love of the game son”
The boy smiles and turns to the field
The game is about to begin
The pitch it thrown
Strike one, the crowd goes wild
The boy is amazed at the power of the sound
He covers his ears
Strike two, another loud cheer
This time the boy cheers with them
To soon the game is over the game is over
The home team wins
The boy is as happy as ever
On the walk back to the car the boy asks
“Daddy can we come back next week”
He replies “we’ll see son, we’ll see”
