Faint Hope Poem by Michael DeVries

Faint Hope

That feel of your kiss he’ll not soon forget
But his joy at that moment, now tinged with regret
He leaves the house now, your taste still on his lips
His thoughts somewhere else, not watchful, he slips
He feels a small emptiness, but inside him it grows
pain from the words, “I don’t want to get too close”

The roads are treacherous on his way back
But his mind lies upon a different track
Taking it out of his hands, he gives it to God
But to think he’ll care not is a thought that is flawed
For the first time now he knows the taste of fear
For the having only makes that loss more clear
