Faceless Poem by Prabhakar Subramaniam

Faceless

I was surprised
To see him dead, so soon
Knowing what they would say
I still asked them
Has he lost his face?
'He never had a face
In the first place
To lose one, they said
'He liked to hide
Preferred to bide
Like all the faceless
He kept chanting
'To have less is to be bless't
Not to be seen is best''
I did not tell them
He never saw the need for a face
I remember, when I asked him
How would they know it is you
And not someone else
He said: My feet, my feet
They'll know be by my feet
My feet is my face
I've never looked them in the face
They're faceless too for me
They're all just feet.
