Eye-Witness Poem by Anindya Mukhopadhyay

Eye-Witness

Rating: 4.5

By twenty a child matures just.
With great potential the virgin
makes his debut under the sun.

Here, slowly the loyal shade retracts.
Unaware we keep on amusing ourselves,
so usual with the new taste of freedom.

Nor everyone can adapt themselves proper
in a rough world all alone. As I was,
uprooted and stood single;
awe-struck among strangers.

Novice and naive I stepped inside. Not welcome
but humiliation was my reward. I felt
a crust develop gradually about the core.

These good few days gave me a start
shortly I came over-the-hill. In haste
I mastered the lesson of my life.

Soon the classical theory cracks. That
my knowledge clashes and comes to nought.
The idea I formed I found no parallel.

Experience do not make for intelligence.
A man do repeat his mistakes. I observe
oft a fly is lured to the sundew plant.

Yet women are not only to blame. I believe
'tis constant after the Law of Nature.
Fools are but Men those disregard the warning.

As one I admit I broke the silence. In the park
endured mosquitoes in her expectation.
I toiled and stood by her through thick and thin.

But young girls as are flippant by the Genus. She
loses interest in the game in long run. I suppose
I made an error to go by the cover.

Fair weather friends I despise. For
I failed to get at her designs before
I was put to use and then discarded.

All day I questioned this frivolity, Lady.
When the thorns of life bleed love—
I stirred, and found myself sterile
She gave the lie and left this morning.

I realised of late: my blindness in the affaire
stands no less than my stupidity.
My parents rebuked. The world mock'd at me.
She concludes the farce once and for all.

A narrow escape 'twas! Yes, one may say.
As I confronted her in the light of reality
the illusion she crafted shattered to pieces.

However, time heals all wounds perfect. The
footprints are erased after an exit is made.
And, the knot unties, the balance shifts,
the chemistry dissolves for good.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This poem, in the form of dramatic monologue, is designed after a young boy's version who has just reached his adolescence. It narrates a child's journey from his very internal self to an external, a larger world.

The poem is a detailed record of the bitter experiences the boy gathers, quite unfortunately, as he grow up. The ‘classical theory' proves false and the child, still young, happens to learn ‘the lesson of his life'. Experience did not make for his intelligence and he soon fell a prey to his beloved's evil ministrations. The sincere conduct of the child in the poem is sharply contrasted with the unfaithful response from the society.

Through the poem, the boy narrator neither accuses his environment i.e. his friends, his family, his love, nor the society at large for the sufferings he had endured rather he accepts these as his fate, as 'the very way of the world'. Feeling disgusted he finally comments: ‘Fools are but Men those disregard the warning'!

The poem ends on a positive note; though, showers of irony, sharp satirical comments and witty remarks runs throughout; which here placed aptly along-with proper use of phrases and idioms enrich the poem.

Readers, please feel free to comment on the poem. Your comments and feedbacks are most welcome.
