Evolution Of Names

My guesses are:

that 'maid' came from the French for 'help me';

that many surnames with 'ment' at the end
once ended in 'man';

that, because of women, logicians
and men of sensitivity,
the old surname Maidman
was packing sent
to be replaced by
Maidment.

I am familiar with the table of examples which you give. Some of them like 'firefighter' make sense.
