Every Poem Begs A Story Poem by Roger Taber

Every Poem Begs A Story

Every poem begs a story from nature
of its power, glory, even shame,
whatever inspires, fuels high fires
of creativity; smouldering coals
in the secret cavities of a soul bound
by natural laws to burst into flames
now and then, if but to light up minds,
expose a heart’s needs, its strengths
as well as weaknesses native to a man
or woman’s power to love, lust,
hate, even shame a world repeating
its worst over and over again…
leaving poor humanity to follow on
as best it can, strive to put right
its worst wrongs, conveniently rewrite
the saddest songs of war, disasters,
wounds no one expects to heal - with
lines even a paralysed heart can feel
though it take a while yet to penetrate
its body armour or even wake up our
latest United Nations resolution to its
promises of aid on the way, hopes
fading at each long day’s turning into
night, night to day, few people
any the wiser for having God’s elected
say, ‘Let’s pray.’ As for those…
how many dare stand and be counted
among infants with HIV-AIDS
instead of pontificating on an everyday
morality of sorts?

Every poem begs a story from nature
about responsibility and nurture
