Every Day I Trudge Up The Hill Poem by Elia Michael

Every Day I Trudge Up The Hill

Rating: 4.0

Every day I trudge up the hill
Step, slowly, laboriously
follows step, forced on by my will
Cold, the sun shines gloriously

As I walk thoughts come to mind
I welcome these guests with a smile
Come, I say, leave the cold behind
And let us be friends for a mile

They enter through some secret door
And warm themselves in me with glee
O so relaxed on my mind's floor
So I say, please entertain me

I have given you warm shelter
And nothing in this life is free
Truly we will all feel better
Entertain me and you will see

And so the thoughts begin to work
One says this, another says that
They begin to drive me berserk
With their endless meaningless chat

Get out! I say, I've had enough
You have abused my kind offers
Get out or I will huff and puff
You away like flying saucers

So these naughtily behaved guests
Realise that they have to go
Admitting they were more like pests
Than good guests, making me their foe

Now alone I climb the steep bank
I turn my head and look around
Wondering if my mind is blank
For I can't hear a single sound

I begin to question my mind
I warmly invited them in
Was I right or was I unkind?
Should I have put up with their din?

Was I a little impatient?
But then they should've shown respect
Perhaps a better agreement
Is needed next time, I reflect

Daily I walk up this steep hill
Step after step I slowly climb
Encouraging myself until
It is just about breakfast time
