Envy Poem by Shalom Freedman

Envy

It is a sin to envy
It is petty to envy
It is wrong to envy
I know this
And yet I envy
And have contempt for myself
For envying

I tell myself I should not envy
And tell myself I really do not envy

I do understand
Each has his life and its sorrows
Each no matter how great will die
My situation is only my situation
And everyone else better off or worse off
Is not me-

I understand
I try not to envy

Perhaps one day
I will be able to heed my own lesson
Envy hurts after all
It is a pang of humiliation
I should not envy
I will try to envy less
Perhaps I will-

Good confessional. Ummm.....I am of a different opinion. You cannot fight nature. The reason you envy is natural. There is a chemical released in your sympathetic nervous system which causes you envy. The issue is what do you do about it....therein lies the sin part. So enjoy envy but dont sin. I think.
