Ellen And William Craft Poem by Ima Ryma

Ellen And William Craft

Slaves, Ellen and William Craft, in
1848 did escape
Georgia, thanks to Ellen's light skin
And disguise in a young man's shape.
For months the married couple planned
On ways and means that Ellen would
Appear as a young white man, and
As William's owner, the two could
Leave the South successfully
And travel to the North where they
Were able to live their lives free.
Decades later there came the day,

The Crafts returned to Georgia where
They taught the newly freed slaves there.
