Eating Cotton Candy And Chasing Rainbows Poem by Holly Jamestone

Eating Cotton Candy And Chasing Rainbows

I live each day as though the hour
May be the penultimate tick of the clock
Or the last chance I may have to say something
That should have never gone unsaid

I chase rainbows and cotton candy
But that doesn’t mean I’ve never been nearly broken
I just don’t let the clouds block my sun
And I admit to having been bent but, oh, have I learned!

The thing that means the most to me is eyes
Because they are the true window to the soul
And the eyes of an elderly person are the most precious of all
Because their message is the greatest gift

They are the eyes of a child reliving days gone by
The pupils of wisdom and the lashes of trust
Hung gently ‘neath brows of a will to live
And just one more day to fly a kite

My purpose is to move from California back to Colorado
To look into Daddy’s warm brown eyes
As I soak up his love and conviction for Life
His impeccable photographic memory of everything that matters

As I listen to him about the many funerals he has
Attended in the last three years
How he has outlived all of his friends
As I gently remind him of His Purpose

To let him know that his middle daughter
The one whom he named after his mother
Is now and will forever be by his side
Flying another kite at Lollipop Lake
Eating Cotton Candy and Chasing Rainbows
